Rareatives Feature: A New Chapter for Alexander Disease

This month, Alexander disease made headline news.

Rareatives — a patient-led publication that turns rare-disease stories into the headlines they deserve — published a feature on our community titled “A New Chapter for Alexander Disease.” It’s a piece we’re proud to share, because it tells our story the way it deserves to be told: honestly, and with hope.

The article captures the moment we’re living through. For decades, families facing Alexander disease were told there was nothing — only ways to manage symptoms. This fall, that changed, with the first FDA-approved treatment for the disease. It’s a treatment, not a cure. But it’s a real turning point, and the start of a genuinely new chapter — one built on years of research and on the families who made that research possible.

What moves us most, though, is bigger than any single milestone. It’s awareness. Alexander disease is ultra-rare, which means most people — including many clinicians — have never heard of it. Every time our story is told in a place like this, someone learns that this disease exists, that families are living with it every day, and that progress is possible. That visibility is how awareness becomes action.

We’re grateful to Rareatives for giving Alexander disease a place in the headlines, and to everyone in our community whose courage makes a story like this one possible.
